An Excellent Addition to Dark Tower Lore (*spoilers included*)

The Battle of Jericho Hill is the fifth series of Marvel's Dark Tower comics, and it's my favorite one since the first. The previous few have drifted farther and farther from Stephen King's novels, fleshing out Roland's past by elaborating on fragments of ideas from the books. This series might have been King's baby, as he mentioned in interviews that one of the first things he imagined when approached by Marvel about the project was his desire to see this very battle illustrated. Set nine years after Gilead's fall to John Farson, Roland and his fellow gunslingers have an encampment at Jericho Hill, but are beset by Farson after being betrayed by a gunslinger named Randolph. As written in King's books, Alain is gunned down by Roland and Cuthbert, Cuthbert is killed after being shot through the eye, and a gravely injured Roland is left for dead after the massacre. In addition, some key plot holes are filled in, one when Marten transforms into Walter, who himself takes the disguise of a monk, revealing clearly that all of these characters are one and the same. King never really comes flat out and states this quite as directly as it is in this series. Also, Roland proclaims at one point that he and his ka-tet will pursue Marten to punish him for his hand in all of the death and destruction, which includes a Beam that was damaged when Gilead fell. Roland vows that they will reach the Dark Tower, and demand a restoration of all that has been lost. These statements are the clearest declarations of Roland's intents and motivations ever articulated. The book has its flaws, usually stemming from added characters or corny narration, but with The Battle of Jericho Hill, the good far outweighs the bad. This series also marks the end of Roland's teen years, since the next arc moves into his young adult period, consisting of the few years between Jericho Hill and his pursuit of Marten that opens Stephen King's novel, The Gunslinger. As usual, this book offers page after page of amazing artwork that seals the deal, and I'd say this one takes the series back into must-have territory for Dark Tower fans.

The end of the beginning

We faithful readers of the Dark Tower books have always wondered about the battle of Jericho Hill, which was mentioned many times in the novels but never gone into in depth. What we did know was that this was a climactic battle, and the forces of evil defeated the dedicated band of gunslingers, leaving only Roland to survive. There was also mention of the horn of Arthur Eld, without more explanation. This excellent graphic novel fills in the details of this sad portion of the Dark Tower saga.

Once again we have excellent scripting and tremendous artistry combined to present to the reader a complete and engrossing book, even if we are not pleased with how the plot goes. It's compelling and, as usual with these works, the reader is hooked from the first page and just goes through the whole book in one sitting.

It's a work that should satisfy even the most rabid King fan, and it gives us the background knowledge to more fully understand the Dark Tower mythology. I assumed that this book would take us to the beginning of the first Dark Tower novel, but I see now that is not the case. That being said, prepare for further volumes in this timeless tale that will eventually take us to when "the man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed".

Highly Recommended, but has flaws

This is a very dense encyclopedia (1924) of then-current information about the American Federation of Labor, known by most as the AFL. A good research resource, but not light reading. The AFL issued these 3 volume editions several times during it's history. The encyclopedias reflect the official version of labor activity. Serious researchers may take issue with some accounts as consisting of more opinion than fact, but overall, and recognizing the issues, highly recommended, and a basic resource for any labor history (in the Americas) library.

Some Famous Cases in the Constitution State

The `Introduction' tells of meeting Dr. Henry C. Lee, one of the world's foremost forensic criminologists. No, OJ did not commit the crime (p.vii). There have been many changes in crime detection in the last two centuries. Witnesses aren't always honest, investigators aren't always perfect. Sophisticated forensic technology solved three shocking cases (p.viii), two of them cold cases. Chapter 1 tells about the `Amistad' incident of illegal slave smuggling when the slaves revolted, took over the ship to return to Africa. They landed at Long Island NY. The Coast Guard towed the ship to New London CT. The two Spaniards were freed, the slaves sent to jail. The Abolitionists sought to free them with a trial in court. They won. The slaves returned to Sierra Leone with missionaries. Abolitionists grew in number and power.

Chapter 2 describes life in the Victorian Age, and the administration of justice. A married man with children had a girlfriend who was pregnant. The Reverend Hayden had a plan to eliminate this inconvenience with arsenic. Medical experts testified about arsenic, the arsenic found in Marry Stannard's stomach matched that bought by Hayden (p.34). The defense lawyer threw doubt upon their testimony. There was a mistrial, and the case was dropped. Hayden's wife was believed over the victim's half-sister and expert testimony (p.35). Chapter 3 tells how a "cold case" was eventually solved by DNA evidence and the identification of an unknown fingerprint. "Penney" Serra was found stabbed to death in a parking garage in July 1973. In 1994 an arrest for domestic violence put a new set of fingerprints into the system; there was a match to a partial fingerprint found in the Serra murder. Edward Grant was arrested, tried, and convicted (p.52). That parking garage was given additional lighting and protection cameras. Parking is important for downtown shopping.

Chapter 4 tells about the brutal murder of fifteen year old Martha Moxley in 1975. Twenty-seven years later Michael Skakel was convicted of the murder, done when he was fifteen. It was 21 years since there was a murder in town. This murder in a very wealthy neighborhood created a media frenzy (p.58). Suspects were questioned. The case grew cold. Dr. Henry Lee investigated, but there wasn't enough evidence (p.65). In December 1999 the grand jury finished its investigation. Michael Skakel was arrested, tried, and convicted. Chapter 5 tells about a serial killer of eight young women during three years in the 1980s. Michael Ross killed his first woman when he was in college. Detective Michael Malchik noticed similar ties in two murders, then was assigned to a third. Malchik had a suspect (p.80). Chapter 6 tells about "the Wood Chipper Murder". Who would chip wood in the dead of night during a snowstorm? Richard Crafts did when his wife went missing, her body was never found. Crafts had been a police constable and was now a police officer. He passed a lie detector test. His wife's private detective alerted the police. Dr. Henry Lee and a detective found fragments of his wife (p.96). Crafts was convicted and got fifty years.

Chapter 7 is about the unsolved murder of Suzanne Jovin in December 1998 in New Haven CT. One man was suspected even though there was no evidence against him (p.105). Conviction by gossip (pp.113-114)? There are questions about known facts (pp.122-123). Chapter 8 is about a triple murder of a woman and her two daughters in Cheshire CT during a home invasion. The father was savagely beaten by the two men. The family were model citizens (p.126). The criminals followed the wife and youngest daughter home from shopping. [I wonder if their public conversation made them vulnerable?] Sending Mrs. Hawke-Petit to withdraw money from a bank resulted in a call to the police (p.127). They caught the pair after they set fire to the house. People learned of the need to lock their doors and cars, and "purchased equipment to protect their safety" (p.128). The legislature reclassified home invasion as a violent felony. The two criminals had lengthy records for burglary but no violent crimes. Millions more were needed for more prisons. The `Bibliography' lists just two books. One is "Cracking More Cases".

About the Author

William "Rick" Yount is professor and assistant dean of the Foundations of Education division, School of Educational Ministries, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He travels every year to teach pastors and missionaries in the former Soviet Union. Yount lives with his wife in Fort Worth, Texas.

Mike Barnett is Elmer V. Thompson professor of Missionary Church Planting at Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions in Columbia, South Carolina. He and his wife served twelve years with the International Mission Board. Barnett’s specialties include church planting, business as missions, and the history of global Christianity.

It Might be Helpful to Some

I had this part of my required reading for a class. At least of my classmates found it very helpful and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, for me the book was a chore to read; The chapters were long and wordy. There are probably some really good things in this book, but unfortunately I think the meanings of the chapters got buried.

Puzzled by fame

When faced with a « classic » novel, how do you come to terms with the fact that you don't like it ?
At the risk of being labeled boorish and unsophisticated, I'll take the plunge and say it : I didn't like Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night.
I'd heard of that novel all my life. Expecting a real treat, I decided that it was time I did something about it. May be I was expecting too much.
First disappointment : the style. I know : it's wonderful at times, with moving and enchanting comparisons and metaphors ; flashes of beauty in the night. However, when you stumble across sentences that have to be read two or three times before you can be sure what they mean (and even then...), it spoils your pleasure somewhat.
Second disappointment : the plot. It sounds hollow.
Third disappointment : the characters. Even more hollow than the plot. Hard to identify with poor little rich girls and boys who have never encountered any real problem, setback or suffering in their lives.
Ibsen used to say : "The rich know how to have fun, but they don't know how to be happy".
In Tender is the Night, you wonder if they even know how to have fun.

Book is in original, non-chronological form. A true classic with many passages of stunning beauty. Truly like "being there," (French Riviera in the 1920s)

Unraveling.......

At first I thought this was about a marriage, then adultery, then co-dependency, then madness, then and then and then..... This is a book about unraveling in all its forms. Everything of importance -- love, places, people, and finally dreams unravels until there is nothing left and everything has been stripped bare and drained. This is not just a portrait of a man, his wife, a marriage, a family, a lifestyle, a time -- it is all of these in turn.

I actually prefer this book to Fitzgerald's masterpiece dissection of the American Dream, The Great Gatsby. Tender Is the Night is not always easy to read, and it does cover some of the same thematic ground (alienation, for one), but it is much more of an intimate, psychological portrait. It is detailed where Gatsby is spare, as it shreds layer upon layer of resilience and dignity. A devastating and achingly beautiful book.

Max Brand was a pen name of American writer Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944). Faust began his career by selling western stories to the pulps of the 1910s. By the 1920s, Faust was writing exclusively for the various popular western pulp magazines of that time. In the 1930s, Brand became a screenwriter; at one point he was earning $3,000 per week and enjoying success from his characters Destry and Dr. Kildare. Dr. Kildare was adapted to motion pictures, radio, television, and comic books. He wrote more than 500 novels for magazines and almost as many stories of shorter length. His total literary output is estimated to have been between 25,000,000 and 30,000,000 words.

The max brand collected works is fun reading. I have only read 2 of the 17 works so far. I enjoyed both. It has been many years since I have read any of his books and these two I had never read. The action is fast and the stories are vivid.

I read westerns many years ago in college. As an engineering major, it gave my mind a welcome break from all the advanced math and engineering courses. I recently started reading some Louis Lamour novels I had saved from those days, but found few Max Brand novels. This collection of Max Brand novels gave me the opportunity to relive those old days in college with my friend, Max Brand.
