One such is Joe Franconi, a big city cop turned police chief for small Pawleys Island, S.C. With his "washboard abs" and painful past, Joe is the average tortured hero, and sexy TV reporter Nicky Sullivan is his natural counterpart. Nicky, with the help of her psychic mother, intends to revisit the scene of a 15-year-old unsolved murder, but Mayor Vince Capra will do anything—even enlist the local police—to keep the program from airing. With no legal ground to stand on, Joe fails to stop the filming, but he's conveniently on hand to rescue Nicky when she stumbles on a fresh murder victim and nearly becomes one herself. Has the killer from 15 years ago resurfaced, or is a new killer on the loose? Joe and Nicky spend as much time arguing over who will solve the case as they do staring "hotly" at one another, but ironically, neither succeeds in solving anything. Though the book has its suspenseful moments (and its amusing ones, which primarily involve a pig named Cleo), its final twist feels manufactured simply to bring hero and heroine together. When Nicky Sullivan starts looking for a story for her failing investigative news program, she thinks about her childhood home on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, remembering the unsolved deaths of three teenagers that occurred there 15 years ago, and turns to the local psychic, her mother Leonora James, for help. The only problem is that her mother, who agreed to a live broadcast, is having problems with her ability to communicate with the dead, and Nicky is worried that the show will be a bust rather than a ratings booster. But Leonora comes through with a riveting reading that instigates a new murder that mimics the previous murders and places Nicky in danger. Instead of hiding, Nicky comes back to the island to cover the investigation and butts heads with the chief of police, Joe Franconi. Joe is a former vice cop from New Jersey who was forced to resign, ending up in the sleepy southern town with an inexperienced department now responsible for searching for what appears to be a serial killer. As the two lead their separate investigations, Joe and Nicky become increasingly attracted to one another. Disappointed

I was really disappointed with Karen Robards latest tale. I have read ALL of her books and I have never been disappointed before. Neither one of the characters did it for me, especially Nicky. She was just a little bit too gungho, ruthless and kinda pushy. She was also either stupid or had a death wish seeing as how she just didn't seem to care all that much about her welfare during most of the book. She kept taking crazy chances and came back to the island where she was attacked and almost killed all in the name of her job. It's great that she was ambitious and wanting to further her career, but that chick needed a help group for workaholics. Also I didn't like the way the story touched on the fact that she had psychic abilities as a child, but repressed them and then when she experienced psychic phenomena as an adult it went nowhere and wasn't mentioned again. The logical conclusion to that(to me at least)is that she would have once again begun to have psychic visions and such, being that she was no longer repressing and was pretty well open to the whole seeing ghosts thing. The whole plot just didn't seem well thought out and the ending was just a little to quick also.

Nicole Sullivan is an investigative reporter for 24 Hours Investigates. She grew up on Pawleys Island, and is doing a TV special on the only unsolved murder case on the island. Fifteen years ago, Tara Mitchell, Lauren Schultz, and Becky Iverson were all teenage girls that went missing. Although Tara's was the only body discovered, it is assumed the other girls met the same horrible fate. Nicky is bringing another aspect to her show, and that is her mother. Lenora James is a well-known psychic, and she is going to try to make contact with the girls.
Joe Franconi is the chief of police on the island, and after the urging of the mayor, tries to stop the show from taping at the home where the murder took place, but is unsuccessful. He immediately has a showdown with the irritating reporter over the show, but as much as he hates
the thought, finds himself very attracted to her. Joe doesn't believe in psychics, but is there to keep peace while the show tapes.
When Nicky disappears after the show's conclusion, Joe goes in search of her, but doesn't expect her to stumble into his path injured and bloody. She insists he go find her coworker, Karen, because she was attacked too only she fears Karen didn't make it. After everything is sorted out, there is one dead, and a killer left with a fascination for Nicky. No one knows if this is the same man that killed the three teens, but the coincidence is too much to ignore. Joe promises to keep her safe, but when the killer steps up his game intent to get to her, all bets are off.
This was my first book by this author, and I liked it! It won't be my last because a good thriller is always appreciated. Nicky was a little whiney, and acted completely like the prima donna, but her attitude shifted when Karen was murdered. Joe is the embodiment of a man with a tortured soul, and his need to protect Nicky consumed him. The ending was a little hurried, but overall a good read.
