The two men join forces in pursuit of what they believe is the lost Book of Cain, the weapon used in the Bibles original murder scene. Meltzer invokes multiple viewpoints as Cal, his father, a mysterious young woman who seems to have befriended the father, a rogue ex-cop, and a hot Federal agent converge on Cleveland in search of the biblical treasure. Teens with a taste for international conspiracies, religion-spouting bad guys, and identity-switching will enjoy this fast ride that leaves some solid and intriguing questions in the wake of its driving plot. His clothes aren’t those of a vagrant, though, and there are mysterious papers in his pocket. But before Cal can begin to puzzle out the details of the assault, he and his father are attacked by an assassin named Ellis, who is tattooed with the marks of Cain. We learn eventually that the gun used to shoot Lloyd is the same weapon used, in 1932, to kill Mitchell Siegel, father of the man who created Superman. How are these two murders linked, and could they both be somehow connected to history’s first murder, the killing of Abel by Cain, another crime with a missing weapon? Although the ties to the Bible and to pop culture lend sparkle to the story, Meltzer tries a bit too hard to combine his love of comics with a high-concept Da Vinci Code–like conspiracy plot. Meltzer made his name with financial thrillers but, since then, has published graphic novels (Identity Crisis, 2005) and another foray into Dan Brown territory (The Book of Fate, 2006). In this episode we find Marshal Billy Vail sending Fargo to Corpus Christi,Texas to find out what happened to the Revenue Cutter Service vessel "Russell Andrew" in the Gulf of Mexico off Corpus Christie.Longarm would much rather be given an assignment in the mountains or in the desert;but when the boss tells you where you're going;you'd better pick up your travel vouchers and get moving.
Fargo has hardly arrived in the seaport town of Corpus Christie when he gets involved in a saloon brawl;and that is just the start of the troubles he finds himself involved in.You don't often get an adventure that involves cattle rustling,ships being sunk,and ghost ships and pirates.Well,hold on to your hat,you're in for all that and even a hurricane for good measure. This results in a fast-action adventure,lots of detective work on the part of Fargo,some real different and well developed interesting types of characters, not too common in this series.The story even involves the lost treasure of a famous pirate who was even more bloodthirsty than his contemporary pirate Jean Lafitte.
Fargo is tested a few too many times for his liking,but as hopeless as it seems at times;we never give up hope for our hero.One would think by the time Fargo has completed his assignment,that he wouldn't be able to clear out of Corpus Christi and get back to Denver fast enough...but why not hang around for a couple of days to enjoy some of the fruits of his labor?

A chemist's dream; a review of the periodic table

This book is not, as the title might suggest, a chemistry textbook. It is in fact a collection of short stories, many of them autobiographical, though some stories of pure imagination are included. The episodes are linked historically and by the fact that the title of each is the same of one of the chemical elements. Some feature in each story illustrates or resembles the chosen elements properties and the search for such collections is part of the fascination of this unusual book.
The purpose of this review is to bring this book to the attention of any science teachers (particularly chemists) who have not come across it before. It is the most enjoyable book I have read for some time and I would like to share its chemical attractions with others who would appreciate them.
Levi manages in his writing to form a bridge between his experiences as a chemist and as a human being in a similar fashion to the way C. P. Snow's books tended to bridge "the two cultures". Primo Levi was an Italian of Jewish origin who made chemistry his profession. In the latter part of the Second World War he was incarcerated in Auschwitz before being liberated by the advancing Soviet forces. He worked again in various posts in Italy as an analytical chemist, but also wrote a number of autobiographical works of different types, his main theme being reconciliation after the horrors of the concentration camps.
The Periodic Table was first published in Italian in 1975 and translated into English in 1984. It received enthusiastic reviews for its easy combination of literary and scientific views of life and was praised as "a beautiful gem of a book" (The New Leader, 26 November 1984), "a work of healing, even buoyant imagination" (New York Times Book Review, 23 December 1984) and "one of the most intelligent books to have come along in years" (Washington Post, 30 December 1984).
Each of the reviewers above has his or her own favorite stories. Particularly praised are Vanadium and Carbon. In Vanadium, Levi investigates the chemistry of the raw materials in a varnish factory. He discovers from an error in the way the raw materials arc described by the chemist in charge of their export from Germany that this man was his overseer in the concentration camp during the war. The exchange of letters between the two men indicates the transitory and variable values of the German chemist - perhaps the easy colorful changes of valency of vanadium explain the title. In Carbon, Levi imagines an atom of carbon released by heating limestone and the many transformations it undergoes. Eventually embedded within his brain, it helps to make the decision to form the final full-stop of the story. This story, and perhaps others, could be used on an appropriate occasion to stimulate children's imaginative writing in science classes.
My own favorite story, Chromium, is also set in the varnish factory and is also concerned with the analysis of the raw materials. An impurity in these materials prevents the varnish from drying when used. Levi, by clever analysis solves the chemical problem (which takes one back to the systematic quantitative analysis many of an older generation will have done at school. The twist in the story is that he learns a long while later that the ingenious solution he found for this particular batch of varnish is still being used many years later when the impurity is no longer present in the starting materials. No one can understand the unusual formula for the varnish yet they still go on making it the same way.
I thoroughly recommend this book. It provokes thought, yet helps to reconcile the most refractory of differences.

A delight! Stories to change how you see yourself, and the world

A surprise, a delight, a writer you'll be glad you met.

Unique and magical, a chemist's life, each chapter centered on one element and its relationship to the author and those around him. Mercury, Lead and Carbon are imaginary, the rest autobiographical. My favorite chapter is the story of the chemists at lunch, and the slice of onion in the linseed oil. But they're all good, even "Argon", the inert gas that serves in Levi's gentle portrait of his family. (Aren't most of our families, well, pretty inert? Yeah.) I wish I could write about MY life and work with half the beauty that Levi writes about his. Practice, man, practice!

Levi is Italian and writes in Italian- the book I read was a translation and I heartily commend the translator for a superb job. To produce something so concise, so laugh-out-loud funny, so telling and reflective, in a different language than it was originally written in! Nearly as skillful as writing the original book. Well done!

This is one of the books I habitually give away to people. One let me know, years later, that he thought it was one of the best books he'd ever read. Good for Bar Mitzvas and Bat Mitzvahs, graduation from middle school, graduation from high school. I read one chapter to my son, when he was less than 10 years old, and he loved it, so I read him the whole thing over several nights. Its that good. Maybe even better.

By the time their series reach a 15th installment, authors tend to fall back on the status quo, putting familiar characters in recognizable situations. Not so with Connelly, who continues to explore the darkest reaches of Harry Bosch's psyche in ways that will surprise even Connelly's die-hard fans. In fact, it is the author's deft combination of police procedural and taut psychological suspense that separates Bosch from other fictional crime detectives. A few critics thought that the condensed time frame led to some unbelievable scenes, but the majority hailed Nine Dragons as one of Connelly's best. Introducing plotlines that will influence Bosch well into the future (his career in books has so far covered nearly two decades, starting with the 1990 Edgar-winning Black Echo), Nine Dragons once again illustrates Connelly's magic touch.

Excellent book.

Excellent story again from Michael Connelly. Some reviewers did not like that this book took Harry Bosch to Hong Kong but I thought that was an excellent locale to round out this book. You saw a different side of Harry, but not too different, now that his is now on his natural beat of LA. He goes to Hong Kong to rescue his daughter who is kidnapped. The daughter, Maddie lives with her mother in Hong Kong and that in itself is it's own story line of Harry and his ex-wife who he still loves. Mr. Connelly certainly can paint an excellent picture in his books explaining the details of any foreign city. You feel as if you are there yourself, evening feeling the humidity of Hong Kong itself. No too much mention in previous books have thee been of Harry's daughter Maddie and I do like reading more about Harry the father and now after this book I hope more is written about Harry's daughter. Loved this book. But I did feel like some things were left hanging such as the funeral for Eleanor Wish. The funeral for Harry's partner Ferras was covered but not Eleanor. Maybe that will be explained in another books as well as Sun Yee did Harry make contact with him? It was left unsaid if Sun Yee was safe especially since he helped Harry and had feelings for Eleanor Wish. But all in all an excellent book.

Not Up To Standards

In his latest thriller featuring LAPD Detective Harry Bosch, author Michael Connelly branches out into international waters. The plot involves Bosch investigating a murder of the Asian owner of a liquor store in South-Central LA. For translating purposes, Bosch calls in an Asian Detective, Chu, to help with the case. What unfolds appears to be a Asian Triad gang related extortion/murder. Meanwhile, Bosch's teenaged daughter is living in Hong Kong with her mother, who works for a swanky Hong Kong casino. After arresting a suspect, Bosch is warned to back off the case or eles "there will be consequences". Well, he soon receives a video on his phone showing his daughter being held hostage in Hong Kong. Is there a leak in the department? Is Chu playing both sides of the fence? Bosch drops everything to rush to Hong Kong to try to find his daughter. Similarities with the movie "Taken" are obvious. This is where the story starts to become somewhat far-fetched. The way he is able to find his daughter is somewhat ridiculous and things are written with a by-the-numbers predictibility. I'm not going to get into details but the ending is rather lame and unsatisfying and I look forward to a better effort from Connelly next time.

A mediocre Bosch

Not one of Connelly's best. There are two problems. Bosch is compulsive in in ways that are dangerous to those around him to those around him, and is told so. As a result a recurring character dies in an arbitrary manner. I have a feeling that Connelly was bored with the character, and wanted to add drama with the removal. But the arbitrariness bothered me. Some of the locales are a good change of pace, but the descriptions were also not up to Connelly's best.
