Excellent book for any .NET programmer

If you program for the .NET framework you *need* this book. It helps to take your debugging skills (as well as understanding of the platform) to the next level. How many times in the past have we tried to nail down a particularly tricky bug, and after hours (or days) of pulling at your hair, given up in despair and doubted our worth as a good programmer ? Well, if you have trodden down that path, then I am sure this book will help. I wish to warn you that this is not a book for a beginner nor for the faint-hearted. It will show you the tools, it will show you the way, but you will have to walk that path which begins by buying this book and reading it.

If you already have Advanced Windows Debugging by the same author and have read it, then you should be in good shape to tackle this one. But if you haven't, fear not, you can still make it.

The book is soft-bound, neatly printed in about 500 pages and contains 10 chapters divided into 3 parts. It doesn't weight much and can be easily carried around.

Part 1 consists of 3 chapters. In the first chapter the reader is an introduction to the tools. The 2nd chapter - CLR fundamentals - contrary to its name, is not a high level overview for the newbie. Instead it is a wealth of information for all .NET programmers. No matter how senior a programmer you are, I will bet that you will still learn something (probably a lot) from this chapter. The 3rd chapter - Basic Debugging Tasks - is a bit lengthy (I don't mean that in a bad way) at about 100 pages, helps you get acquainted with the tools and commands.

Part 2 consists of 4 chapters - Assembly Loader, Managed Heap and Garbage Collection, Synchronization and Interoperability. As you might guess from the names, it is pretty advanced. It is hard, but you will emerge with a much better and clearer understanding of the platform. The chapter on interoperability might not be useful for everybody, but for those who have felt the pain of COM interop or PInvoke this chapter pays for the price of the book many times over.

Part 3 consists of the advanced-advanced topics. There is a chapter named Postmortem debugging which includes debugging problems when you have no access to the live machine and you cannot reproduce the problem locally. It consists of taking a dump file and analyzing it offsite. Not an everyday topic for most programmers, but you will surely be thankful for this chapter if you ever come across it. It also explains how the Windows error reporting works. The second last chapter is called PowerTools which includes discussion of PowerDbg which allows you to control native debuggers using powershell (how cool is that !). There is also information on Visual Studio integration with SOS and on CLR Profiler. The last chapter, a small one at about 15 pages, is on .NET 4.0 (based on Beta 1 release though).

The writing style is very clear and precise. There are plenty of samples and some good diagrams to help your understand the concepts better (i loved them, a picture is worth a thousand words). In short, this is book worth purchasing and worth reading and worth reading again (which is what I am going to do).

Must have for anyone interested in debugging and/or CLR internals

Advanced .NET Debugging is a great book and a valuable addition to any dedicated .NET developer's toolbox. Not only does it cover the highly useful Debugging Tools for Windows package (the book uses ntsd for all examples, but everything applies to WinDbg as well) and how to debug hard-to-solve problems. It also provides a lot of details on how the .NET runtime works internally. It is well written, easy to read, and full of useful gems. My only complaint is that the examples use debug builds, which may give a somewhat misleading view on how to go about troubleshooting problems in real world applications as release mode builds will usually not have the same amount of details available. However, it still comes highly recommended.

Deepest .NET Debugging book

As one of the official reviewers of this book I think this is the deepest .NET debugging book I'm aware of. It teaches how to use WinDbg and other troubleshooting tools to diagnose problems like hangs, crashes and memory leaks coming from .NET applications. The cool thing here is that these techniques are the same techniques used by folks from Microsoft Support!

A Good CHRISTMAS / GRADUATION GIFT for Young Folk

This is a 2nd Edition updated in 2008.

STRONGLY recommend this book to every young man and woman graduating from High School or College. A very practical, down-to-earth guide to all sorts of financial issues (including budgeting, credit cards, renting an apartment, buying a home, insurance, retirement planning/401K/IRA/Roth versions, investing, and debt reduction).

Have given a half dozen copies of the first edition to first cousins once removed, and will now be giving the second edition to the next crop of friend's kids.

This 2nd Edition has updated a lot of material, but has added important new material such as ROTH 401 plans, etc. Good job by the author.

Last Christmas-time, a year after giving a first cousin once removed (also a college student) a first edition copy of the book, I asked if they used the book. The answer was yes, it was passed back and forth to their friends, and they (the cousin and her hubby) came back from the bank after applying for a home loan and reread the chapter to understand the terms of the loan expoused by the loan officer.

This book and Dave Ramsey's book, Financial Peace University, will assure that any young person will be well versed in how to handle money.

Five star rating. Highly recommend as a Christmas or graduation gift.... JAS

Just what I needed!

Im in my early 20's and I wanted to start planning for my retirement (the sooner the better) but just entering the real world I have no idea where to start or anything about Finances and this book is awesome. It broke terms down for me to understand and its really helping me take hold of my financial future! This is a great book!

Uneven but useful introduction

I read this book shortly after turning 25 having graduated from college with hefty student loans and in between jobs. I'd say I was definitely in the target audience for the book. I assumed this book was for the absolute beginner, assuming no previous personal finance knowledge. I was wrong.

The book covers a solid range of material but doesn't always hold your hand. At times, it walks you through new concepts gently and slowly, such as investing, retirement, and estate planning. But several times it rips through material very quickly assuming you already know the basics. I felt that when reading the about insurance, credit cards, and net worth. This is best illustrated by the following passage, "How to Prepare a Net Worth Statement":

"Start by listing all the things of value you own, even if you owe money on them, such as your house and car. Use their full market value as of today. The balances of the loans related to these assets will be included in the liabilities section, so your equity in the assets you list won't be overstated. For bonds, stock options, and retirement accounts, use the current value, not the value at maturity or the value on the date you're fully vested."

This is chapter 1 and this is intimidating! Why the paragraph full of financial terminology without definitions? Sure, things like full market value are explained soon after but most aren't. Where is the proper overview of everything that fits into your financial picture? Why am I ask to sum things I'm not sure I even have in terminology that hasn't even been explained yet?

Overall, the book is a worthwhile read. I just hope the 3rd edition, if there ever is one, walks you through more of the basics because not every 20-something-year-old has a mortgage, a car, a spouse, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, wills, disability insurance, 401(k)s and Roth IRAs. And if they do, do they really need this book?

have I read this before?

I think this must be a reprint? Since I like Civil War of the Americas stories, I bought this one thinking it was new. Believe I read this long long time ago. So you might want to check your keeper shelves before buying.

Jason Tarkenton is a Confederate, caught in the hell of battle. The air is so thick with gunfire that he cannot find his unit. It gets thicker and thicker, until he makes a wrong turn, a la Twilight Zone and steps into modern day and right into the middle of a Civil War reenactment.

Vickie Knox was no Scarlett O'Hara, but a Yankee lady, and her dress reflects that. So when the handsome, sexy Confederate comes riding out of the mist, she thinks he is just another reinactor. Only this Johnny Reb is playing for real. He takes her captive making her think this man has taken his role a bit too much to heart, until he gradually makes her understand he is from the past.

Excellent Time-Travel skillfully done.

Not Heather Graham's best work

Ordinarily, I love Heather Graham books. Unfortunately, this was not one of her better works. I am not a fan of time travel to begin with. The love affair happened too quickly. The relationship should have been nurtured and grown but instead they almost immediately began to have sex. The book was purchased because I usually love anything Civil War related but this book really had very little to do with the war itself. I actually liked the ending of the book, though, which dealt with a notation in a library book telling what happened to them after they returned to Civil War era.

Last Cavalier

this is the third copy of this book that I have, the first was loaned to a friend in Arkansas, never returned, the second was loaned to someone in Mississippi, she still has it, I looked for it at Amazon, found it, this one I will not loan. It is a great book, I enjoyed it the first time, then I became a Civil War reenactor, and enjoyed it even more, I have been a reenactor for15 years, like the book even more.
