Late 90s Noir

I enjoyed reading this modern (as of the late 90s) noir short. I don't usually read mysteries, but this one sounded interesting so I downloaded it.
The story introduces private eye Payton Sherwood. He starts out searching for a runaway teen and ends up trying to solve a murder. Since this was only a short story, there's not much opportunity to develope the plot and characters, but it was a fun, gritty ride that proves short stories aren't dead.

MIckey Spillane would be proud!

"East Village Noir" is a short story used to introduce the private eye Payton Sherwood, who is the central character in the author's mystery series. I'm not especially keen on buying a single short story; however, the author, Russell Atwood, mentioned in one of the Amazon community forums that he would have preferred to give the story away in order to introduce readers to his Payton Sherwood mystery series, but that Amazon would not allow him to do this. In any case, I was interested enough to buy the story, and after reading it, I have no regrets.
"East Village Noir" is a well written, fast-paced story about a case where a down-and-out New York City private investigator named Payton Sherwood is contacted by the parents of a teenage girl who has run away from her New Hampshire home and is living in NYC. The distraught parents drive to New York City and hire Sherwood to find their daughter, who had been in contact with them but has suddenly disappeared without a trace. Sherwood takes the case and is quickly involved in much more than he bargained for. With a short story, it's tough to say much more without giving away spoilers, but the story does have a nice surprise twist at the end that caught me flat-footed.
Payton Sherwood is an old-style "film noir" gumshoe somewhat reminiscent of a Mickey Spillane character, but he actually reminded me more of a male version of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum character. He's a smart aleck with just the right combination of cynicism and soft-heartedness to be a likable character.
"East Village Noir" originally appeared under the title "East of A" in a 1997 Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. Because of the story's age, there is one glaring anachronism where Sherwood is downloading a file to his computer over a dial-up connection when the file transfer is interrupted by a phone call. I suppose the author could have revised the story to be consistent with current technology, but this is a very minor quibble that did not affect my enjoyment of the story.
I love good mysteries, and "East Village Noir" is a good, quick read that I enjoyed very much. As a bonus, the story includes the first chapter of the author's Payton Sherwood novel "Losers Live Longer."
So while I'm not very keen on paying a dollar for a short story, I got my money's worth, and the author's use of the story to introduce readers to his Payton Sherwood mystery series was very effective. I'm hooked.

a short intro to PI Payton Sherwood

“East Village Noir” is a short story that serves as an introduction to the great New York City detective Payton Sherwood. Russell Atwood has used Sherwood in two full-length novels, “East of A” and “Losers Live Longer.” This version of East Village Noir contains samples from both of those novels. It also contains the short (very short) story “Holes,” which is about what a man finds when he reaches his hand into various holes, a rather unusual story.
Our story takes place in 1997’s New York City. Our hero, PI Sherwood is tasked by parents from rural New Hampshire with finding their fifteen-year-old daughter, Melissa, who ran off to New York City. It is a smooth-reading story that has Sherwood checking out a few haunts in the lower east side.
The story is at its best with some of its descriptions of the various neighborhoods such as the description of Gramercy Park as “the last holdout to a forgotten age of gentility in Manhattan, the elegant era of Edith Wharton.” St. Marks Place is “lined with a “string of T-shirt stands, CD stores, and bars” attracting college students and tourists from all over the world, “who in turn attracted the homeless and the criminal to peddle sob stories or drugs.”
The descriptions of the various characters Sherwood meets are also quite interesting. Ms. Janssen is described as wearing “a dark blouse and a white satin skirt that clung to her like a layer of thick cream.” There are a pack of kids on skateboards, a man in a black wig and high heels, two severe-looking women with close-cropped black hair, and a young man with pale, almost translucent flesh, a missing front tooth, and “a brass ring pierced through his nose like a bull.” And then there’s the guy described as “fireplug stocky with a hard Buddha belly,” a bald head, and a black “Kentucky-colonel beard sprouting from his chin.”
With these descriptions of people and places, Atwood sets his detective sharply into the lower east side. Suprisingly, the story is not that dark and foreboding, perhaps because Sherwood doesn’t take himself too seriously. It’s a good short and well worth reading as an introduction to Atwood’s longer novels.
